INTRODUCTION
Situated amidst the vast ocean, Taiwan’s natural environment bears distinctive island characteristics, intertwined with the ancestry and life experiences of its inhabitants. Since the Neolithic period, Austronesians have traversed the seas to this island and made it their home. Following the early 17th century, Taiwan experienced waves of colonization by the Dutch, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese, all of which have shaped its unique maritime history.
This exhibition showcases recent significant archaeological findings related to Taiwan’s maritime culture, presented by archaeologists from our university.
Highlights include cultural relics from various prehistoric eras: the Paleolithic, Pre-Ceramic, and Neolithic cultures at the Baxian Cave Site in Taitung; the ancient shell tool manufacturing site at the Eluanbi Site in Pingtung; the stone tool manufacturing site on Qimei Island in Penghu; and various cultural layers from 3,000 to 300 years ago on Heping Island in Keelung. Additionally, numerous shipwrecks discovered in Taiwan’s waters are featured.
These archaeological discoveries provide visitors with insights into the evolution of Taiwan’s maritime culture, fostering a deeper appreciation for the preservation of maritime cultural heritage, and inviting a collective exploration of Taiwan’s profound oceanic memories.
