【Event】Underwater Cultural Heritage in Matsu

The ocean around Matsu holds not only the memories of its residents but also centuries of maritime history resting beneath the waves. To promote awareness of underwater cultural heritage and strengthen community engagement, the Research Center for Underwater Archaeology and Heritage, National Tsing Hua University, will host the “Underwater Cultural Heritage in Matsu Outreach and Education Program” on September 28th, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.(8:30am start to regestion) at the Matsu Folklore Museum.
The Matsu Islands have long been a vital hub at the northern end of the Taiwan Strait, witnessing flourishing fisheries and maritime trade. Among the stories hidden beneath its waters is the S.S. Sobraon, a British passenger and cargo ship that sank near Dongyin in the 1910s after striking the Beigu Reef. Resting silently offshore for over a century, the wreck was brought back into public memory through local community efforts in 2013 and was later recognized in 2015 as a nationally listed historic shipwreck for its unique 19th-century shipbuilding techniques and maritime value.
This discovery not only unveiled a forgotten chapter of maritime history but also highlighted the power of community participation in cultural heritage preservation. Through this program, community members, teachers, and students are invited to explore Matsu’s ocean heritage, learn the story of the S.S. Sobraon, and consider how such history can inspire contemporary community development.
Participants will also receive a commemorative gift, adding a special touch to the event.
