[Event Participation] 2026 New Taipei City Archaeology Festival “Shipwreck Exploration” Successfully Concluded
On the 25th and 26th of this month, our center collaborated with the Institute of Anthropology at National Tsing Hua University to participate in the Archaeology Festival organized by the Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology. We presented an interactive activity, “Shipwreck Exploration,” introducing the shipwrecks "Kong-Ke Yu No. 1" and Mansei Maru, as well as the practice of underwater archaeological investigation.
Using 3D printing technology, our team reproduced key artifacts from both shipwrecks and placed them within a simulated marine environment constructed with cellophane, kinetic sand, and cardboard. This setting recreated the appearance of an underwater site, allowing visitors to wear diving masks (VR headsets) and experience a sense of being underwater. Participants also engaged in activities such as underwater photography, seabed sampling, and post-dive archaeological recording, encouraging them to reflect on the function and origins of the shipwrecks.
The aim of this activity was to bring otherwise inaccessible underwater heritage onto land. Beyond entertainment and immersive experience, it helped visitors better understand that underwater sites may lack intact ship structures and may contain marine debris. The activity also highlighted the importance of archaeological context and marine environmental protection, reinforcing the idea of preserving shipwreck heritage together.
